Honoring A Pawesome Dog: The Boston Terrier

January 1, 2025

Did you know the Boston Terrier was once one of the most beloved breeds in the country? Fido is still quite popular in his home state of Massachusetts, but he has dropped down the rankings in other locations. In 2023, the adorable puppy was ranked as the 23rd most popular breed among the 200 officially recognized by the AKC. That ranking will not earn you a prize, but it is also not bad. There are plenty of reasons to like this adorable little dog! This dashing little puppy is in the spotlight thanks to a local Exeter, CA veterinarian.

Breed Basics: Boston Terrier

The Boston Terrier is thick, stocky, and adorably cute. He wears smooth fur with a beautiful tuxedo attire that can be black, brindle, or seal against white. Fido has a square head, pointed ears, and an expressive, cute face. Boston Terriers frequently have expressive eyes, which adds to their attractiveness.

To examine a few numbers. These guys are normally about 15 to 17 inches tall at the shoulder. They normally live between the ages of 11 and 13, though they can survive to be 14. The breed standard divides the puppies into three weight classes. The first is for dogs weighing less than 15 pounds. The next category is for dogs aged 15 to 20, and the third is for puppies aged 20 and up. However, Fido’s weight should not exceed 25 pounds.

What is the Boston Terrier’s History?

Most breed lineages can be traced using historical records and/or DNA. The Boston Terrier may actually be traced back to a specific period and location. The Burnett House is in Southborough, Massachusetts. The palace was erected in 1847 for scientist Joseph Burnett, who produced vanilla extract. He is probably better known now as the founder of the beloved breed. In the 1860s, Joseph’s son Edward crossed a white bulldog, Burnett’s Gyp, with a darker dog, Hooper’s Judge, who is assumed to be a hybrid between the English Bulldog and the now-extinct White English Terrier. This is where things take an amazing turn. Even though the two dogs only had one puppy, Eph became the progenitor of the handsome Boston Terrier.

As previously stated, Fido was born in Southborough, Massachusetts. However, in the late 1800s, he rose to prominence in Boston’s Beacon Hill neighborhood, captivating not just socialites but also the coachmen who drove them. Fido got his own fan club, the Boston Terrier Club, in 1891. The Boston Terrier was eventually admitted to the AKC’s non-sporting division in 1893. The breed has its own day, which is commemorated in February.

Are Boston Terriers Usually Healthy?

Though Fido is normally pretty strong, there are a few health concerns that owners should be aware of. One cause of concern is vision problems. Those adorable bug eyes are quite vulnerable to injury. Check Fido’s eyes daily for redness and inflammation. We also recommend screening your canine companion for common eye issues such as cataracts, corneal ulcers, and glaucoma.

Boston Terriers have brachycephalic heads. Their short, flat faces are adorable, but they come at a cost. Brachys tend to lose their breath quickly. In warmer temperatures, they can easily overheat and run out of air. They are also more likely to experience cardiac failure. Hip dysplasia and allergies are also rather prevalent.

The National Breed Club advises Patella Evaluation, Ophthalmologist Evaluation, and BAER Testing. Of course, you’ll need to take your canine buddy to the veterinarian regularly for exams and wellness treatment. This is a great time to get some custom care tips.

Do Boston Terriers Need a Lot of Grooming?

When it comes to grooming, these fashion-forward puppies are quite simple to care for. Brush Fido at least once a week to remove dead fur and help spread his natural oils. However, you won’t have to bathe your canine companion frequently. You will need to clip your dog’s claws regularly. Visit your animal clinic regularly to get expert advice on your adorable pet’s nutrition and care requirements.

What Is The Temperament Of A Boston Terrier?

The Boston Terrier is from one of America’s largest and oldest cities, so it’s only natural that these pups are sociable. Fido is the ideal pooch to take to a park or cafe: well-mannered and personable, he usually wastes no time winning people over. These dogs are also often good with children and other pets. Nonetheless, training and socialization are critical. It’s worth noting that these dogs are quite emotional and can become agitated and upset if reprimanded severely. Choose positive reinforcement and reward appropriate behavior.

Ask your Exeter, CA veterinarian for further information.

Is There A Nickname For The Boston Terrier?

Fido was previously referred to as a Roundhead, which is amusing given that the breed actually has a rather square head shape. The puppies have also been dubbed ‘American Gentlemen’ because of their formal attire and nice demeanor.

What Are The Most Enjoyable Activities For Boston Terriers?

We can’t technically poll Fido on this, but if we could, we bet he would say Fetch and Tug O War are his two favorite activities. These would be followed by begging for goodies, going for walks, requesting belly rubs, and simply hanging out with their owners.

Who Are Some Famous Owners of Boston Terriers?

Many celebrities have Boston Terriers. Helen Keller is probably one of the most well-known Boston Terrier enthusiasts. Her canine companion, Sir Thomas, or “Phiz” for short, frequently accompanied her to Radcliffe College.

Here are some other well-known fans:

  • Jake Gyllenhaal

Who Is The Most Famous Boston Terrier?

The most famous Boston Terrier is most likely Sergeant Stubby, who was dubbed the most decorated battle dog of World War I. The brave pup went to France with the 26th (Yankee) Division and was recognized for his heroic actions. During his duty, he protected his friends from mustard gas, soothed the injured, and even caught a German by the seat of his pants, holding him captive until Americans came. He received a gold medal, wound strip, and two Purple Hearts. There’s even a movie about him! Sgt. Stubby: An American Hero, an animated film, was released in 2018.
